Field Training Daoulas Peninsula 1944 On the seco Field Training Daoulas Peninsula 1944

On the second weekend in September, the members of our Reenactment Association completed a private field training in the wonderful area of the Úterský potok near the village of Pakoslav. The main topic of the event was the deployment of Company B, 38th Infantry Regiment, US 2nd Infantry Division during the August 1944, fighting on the Daoulas Peninsula, where the enemy had the artillery positions that threatened the Allied advance on the port city of Brest, France.

Our unit's task was to recon the area around the river and the nearby defensive line of enemy pillboxes and fortified positions. Shortly after entering the forest where, according to our intelligence reports, the enemy's defense line was supposed to be deployed, we encountered the first of a series of pillboxes. There was a quick tactical meeting with the squad leader on how to seize the pillbox. The Baker Section took up a position for fire support. Charlie Section held positions on the right flank for a possible attack. Following the reconnaissance, Able Section went forward to occupy the bunker. They tried to advance slowly, using cover by trees and terrain as much as possible. It was soon discovered that the bunker was not occupied. However, remnants of earlier enemy activity were strewn around.

We encountered no resistance when occupying other bunkers. The enemy has already withdrawn on this sector of the front. We therefore continued our task and advanced towards the river. Our squad was divided into three smaller teams tasked with occupying or checking individual points on the main route of reconnaissance. After completing the individual tasks of all the teams, we met at the agreed place and proceeded further along the river, back to the starting point to our lines.

As part of the exercise, after the summer we again recalled and mastered the basic skills of movement of the infantry squad in the field and prepared for the upcoming events that await us during the fall - PFC James R. Kydland
The Battle of Hill 192, Normandy - Reenactment Eve The Battle of Hill 192, Normandy - Reenactment Event 🇺🇸🇫🇷🇨🇿

The first days in July our project team helped to organize a reenactment event commemorating men of the 23rd Infantry Regiment during the Battle of Hill 192.

We decided to portray members of the 23rd Infantry Regiment during their first combat deployment with a task to seize a hamlet Saint-Georges-d'Elle in June 1944. The 23rd Infantry Regiment was the last rifle regiment of the 2nd Infantry Division to disembark on Omaha Beach on June 9-11, 1944. Immediately thereafter, they began an advance inland to join the 2nd ID near Hill 192.

On June 12, the units of the 2nd Infantry Division met for the first time in the hedgerows of Normandy an entirely new, determined and elite enemy - the 3rd Fallschirmjäger-Division. The German paratroopers moved rapidly from Brittany for several days and they took up defensive positions around Hill 192 just a few hours before the arrival of members of the 2nd ID. In the next weeks of fighting, Saint-Georges-d'Elle repeatedly fell into the hands of both the Americans and the Germans. On July 11, 1944, after literally a month of fighting, an attack by combined assault teams with support of massive shelling, managed to dislodge the German paratroopers and finally capture the crucial Hill 192, and thus end one of the most critical battles that the 2nd Infantry Division fought in WWII.

In the photos you can see members of the Military Historical and Reenactment Association @tommy.yankee together with our colleagues from the Reenactment Association @kvh_4th_ad_cz , US Army, representing the riflemen of Company G and a heavy machine gun team of Company H, 23rd Infantry Regiment in the hedgerows near Saint-Georges-d'Elle, France. Most of our equipment and uniforms are originals from the war, showing the exact appearance of the 2nd ID´s members during the fighting in June 1944. The photographs were taken primarily for illustrative and educational purposes.

The scenario was situated into the battle of Hürtgen Forest (October 1944). We represented 39th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division. Four of our members operated with 60mm M2 mortar and created one of three mortar teams. The other two MTs were created by our friends from @kvh_4th_ad_cz and @82abn505pir_kvh44 . The rest of us and our friends were part of a infantry squad. Our task was to patrol, find, capture or eliminate enemy troops and get the area under control. We operated during the day and night. The infantry squad directed mortar fire on enemy positions several times. This activity practiced cooperation not only between squads but also between our associations. We were also supported by two GMC trucks, one Dodge and two Jeeps. We’d like to thank our friends from @kvh_4th_ad_cz and @82abn505pir_kvh44 for a great cooperation and organization. We very enjoyed this event and we’re looking forward to another one!
